Ingredients

Cranberry sauce base
  • 12 oz fresh cranberries
  • 1.75 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 Granny Smith apple peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1 orange zested and juiced
  • 1 lemon zested and juiced
  • 0.5 cup golden raisins
  • 0.5 cup walnuts or pecans toasted and chopped

Equipment

  • 1 saucepan

Method

Simmer the cranberries
  1. Bring fresh cranberries, sugar, and water to a boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat, then simmer for 5 minutes until the skins pop, stirring occasionally.
  2. Add the diced Granny Smith apple, orange zest, orange juice, lemon zest, and lemon juice, then simmer for 15 minutes until the sauce thickens and the fruit is tender.
Finish and chill
  1. Remove from the heat and stir in the golden raisins and toasted, chopped walnuts or pecans.
  2. Cool completely, then cover and refrigerate up to 1 week.
  3. Serve chilled or at room temperature.

Notes

Pro tip: simmer until you visibly see the cranberry skins pop for the signature chunky texture. Refrigerate in a covered container up to 7 days; freezing is not recommended because the fruit texture can turn grainy. For a dairy-free or vegan-friendly swap, this recipe already fits those needs; for lower sugar, replace some of the sugar with an equal amount of a no-sugar-added cranberry sweetener blend if your brand supports 1:1 substitution.
