Method
Prep and preheat
- Preheat the oven to 400°F and grease a 9x13 baking dish.
- Arrange all ingredients so toppings and cheese are ready before the casserole goes together.
Brown the beef mixture
- Brown the ground beef with the diced onion in the oven-safe pan until the beef is no longer pink.
- Drain excess fat from the pan, then add the minced garlic and cook for 30–60 seconds until fragrant.
- Stir in ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and salt and pepper, cooking until evenly combined.
- Stir in the cheddar cheese soup and sour cream until smooth, then transfer the mixture to the greased 9x13 baking dish.
Add fries and bake
- Sprinkle 1.5 cups shredded cheddar over the beef layer.
- Arrange the frozen french fries in a single layer over the cheese.
- Bake 35–40 minutes at 400°F until the fries are golden and crispy.
- Scatter the remaining shredded cheddar over the fries, then bake 5 more minutes until melted.
- Serve immediately with dill pickle slices.
Notes
For the crispiest top, spread the frozen fries in a single layer with no gaps piled on top of each other. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat at 350°F until warmed through. Freezing is not recommended because the fries can soften after thawing. For a lighter option, use reduced-fat cheddar cheese and swap the sour cream for light sour cream.
