Coat the apples
- In a bowl, toss apple wedges with melted butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract until evenly coated. The apples should look glossy and fully dusted with the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
Preheat air fryer
- Preheat the air fryer to 375°F. Let it reach temperature before cooking so the edges caramelize quickly.
Air fry
- Arrange the apple slices in a single layer in the basket. Work in batches if needed so they don’t crowd and steam.
- Air fry for 10-12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway, until caramelized and tender. Look for deep golden edges and softened wedges that still hold their shape.
Serve
- Serve warm over vanilla ice cream with a drizzle of caramel sauce. The hot apples should slightly melt the ice cream for a gooey sauce finish.
Notes
For the crispiest edges, keep the apple wedges in a true single layer and avoid overcrowding—batch if needed. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, then reheat in the air fryer or microwave until warmed through. Freezing isn’t recommended because the texture of apples softens too much. Dietary swap: use coconut oil (instead of butter) for a dairy-free version while keeping the same cinnamon-sugar mixture.
